Introduction
One of the biggest decisions Secondary 2 students face is choosing between Combined Science and Pure Science for their O-Level subject combination. Both have merit — but the wrong choice can cost a student grades, confidence, and time.
What Is Combined Science?
Two sciences, one paper
Combined Science allows students to take two science subjects — typically Biology/Chemistry or Physics/Chemistry — under a single grade. Each subject covers half the depth of its Pure Science equivalent. It is the more common choice in Singapore secondary schools and frees up timetable space for other subjects.
What Is Pure Science?
Greater depth, greater demand
Pure Science covers a single science subject — Physics, Chemistry or Biology — in full depth. Students take a dedicated paper for each science and receive individual grades. The content goes significantly deeper than Combined Science and aligns closely with A-Level prerequisites.
Pure Science is required for students targeting Medicine, Engineering or Science at university. It is also more demanding in terms of weekly content and exam preparation time.
How Each Is Graded at O-Level
Comparing the scoring implications
Combined Science is graded as a single subject from A1 to F9. Admissions processes treat it as one subject in L1R4/L1R5 calculations. Pure Science subjects are each graded individually — a student taking Pure Physics and Pure Chemistry receives two separate grades.
From a university admissions standpoint, Pure Science grades carry more weight for science-track courses. Combined Science is sufficient for many courses but may not satisfy prerequisites for competitive programmes.
Which Students Should Take Pure Science?
It suits students who are strong and motivated
Pure Science is the right choice if your child has a genuine interest in science, consistently scores well, and has a clear aspiration towards a science-related career. It is not the right choice if your child is already stretched across their subject combination — forcing Pure Science on an unmotivated student often backfires.
How OutClass Education Supports Both Paths
Targeted coaching for combined and pure science students
Our Secondary Science programme covers both Combined and Pure Science syllabuses. Whether your child is preparing for O-Level Physics, Chemistry, or a combined paper, we align every lesson to the MOE syllabus in our max-6 classes. If your child is undecided, book a free trial and we will advise based on their current performance and goals.
