O Level Score Calculator: L1R5 and ELR2B2

Use this free calculator to estimate your child's L1R5 score for junior college, L1R4 for Millennia Institute and ELR2B2 scores (types A to D) for polytechnic courses, from their O Level grades or prelim grades. It picks the best combination of subjects for each score and takes off bonus points, following the Ministry of Education's rules for the 2027 Joint Admissions Exercise (for the 2026 O Level results, released in January 2027).

1. Enter the O Level grades

Use the real results slip, or prelim grades for an estimate. Add every subject taken. Leave out Religious Knowledge (it never counts) and any subject without a grade.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is L1R5?

L1R5 is the score used for junior college admission: First Language (English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five relevant subjects. R1 is a Humanities subject, R2 is a Mathematics or Science subject, R3 is a Humanities, Mathematics or Science subject, and R4 and R5 are any two other subjects. Grades count as points, A1 = 1 to F9 = 9, so the lowest possible score is 6. Religious Knowledge cannot be counted.

What L1R5 score is needed for junior college?

The L1R5 score before bonus points must be 20 or lower, with English A1 to C6, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics A1 to D7, and Mother Tongue A1 to D7 (or Higher Mother Tongue A1 to E8). Popular junior colleges need much lower scores. Up to 4 bonus points can then be taken off for a good CCA grade, Higher Mother Tongue, or choosing an affiliated junior college.

What is ELR2B2?

ELR2B2 is the score used for polytechnic courses: English, two relevant subjects and the best two other subjects, minus up to 2 CCA bonus points. There are four types, A to D, depending on the course. The score must be 26 or lower (28 for Nursing), and each course also has its own minimum grades.

Which score does my child's course use?

Each polytechnic course uses one of the four ELR2B2 types; MOE's CourseFinder lists them. After the results, every student receives Form A from MOE, which shows the courses they are eligible for. Use this calculator as an estimate before that.

Is this changing from 2028?

Yes. MOE has announced changes to junior college and Millennia Institute admission from the 2028 Joint Admissions Exercise. This calculator uses the rules for 2027.

How can my child improve before the O Levels?
