Introduction
Every Secondary school student in Singapore takes Elementary Mathematics (E-Math). But Additional Mathematics (A-Math) is a choice — and it is one of the most consequential subject decisions students make before O-Levels.
What Is E-Math?
The baseline maths for all students
E-Math covers the core mathematics all Singapore O-Level students are expected to know: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, trigonometry and mensuration. It is designed to be accessible to a wide range of students and forms the foundation for everyday quantitative reasoning. A good E-Math grade (A1–B3) keeps all post-secondary doors open.
What Is A-Math?
A deeper, more abstract level of maths
Additional Mathematics goes significantly further. It covers advanced algebra, calculus, trigonometry identities and proofs, logarithms, coordinate geometry, and more. The content overlaps substantially with H2 Mathematics at A-Level and is typically offered only to students who demonstrate strong mathematical ability in Secondary 1–2.
Who Should Take A-Math?
It is the right choice for some — not all
A-Math is worth taking if your child consistently scores well in E-Math, enjoys abstract problem-solving, and has ambitions in engineering, computer science, medicine, or pure sciences. Many JC and university courses have an implicit or explicit preference for students who have passed A-Math.
It is not the right choice if maths is already a source of stress and your child is managing a heavy subject combination. Students who take it reluctantly often see both their E-Math and A-Math grades suffer.
Does Taking A-Math Improve E-Math Grades?
Usually yes — with the right support
Students who take A-Math and keep up with the content tend to find E-Math easier, because A-Math builds stronger algebraic intuition. The reverse is not true — but A-Math does create time pressure across the full subject combination.
How OutClass Education Supports Both
Tailored coaching for E-Math and A-Math students
Our Secondary Mathematics programme covers both E-Math and A-Math across all Secondary levels. We regularly help students who have fallen behind in A-Math catch up quickly through targeted gap-filling in our max-6 classes, while maintaining strong E-Math performance throughout. Book a free trial and we will assess your child’s current level honestly.
